The Top Three Films Based on Poems
The Man From Snowy River
The 1982 drama was originally based on the poem by The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Paterson. The poem tells the story of a horseback pursuit to recapture the colt of a prizewinning racehorse that escaped from its paddock and is living wild with the brumbies of the mountain ranges. Eventually the wild horses descend a seemingly steep slope, at which point the riders give up their pursuit, except the young hero, who continues forward to catch the mob. The Australian based film, following along the same lines, won awards for Best Original Music Score and Most Popular Film. It was also nominated for Best Achievement in Sound and Best Foreign Film. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The 2000 comedy starring George Clooney was adapted from Greek poet Homer's epic poem The Odyssey. Set in modern times, the film follows several aspects of the poem, including the usage of Cyclopes and Sirens who seduce travelers. Troy
The 2004 epic war film starring Brad Bitt and Eric Bana tells the tale of Homer's epic poem The Iliad minus the interference of the Greek Gods. While the film focuses solely on the historical aspects of the war, it does stay true to the essence of the poem. The film adequately depicts the greed of Agamemnon, the pride of Achilles, and the battle between Hector and Achilles.
